Off topic

Call me crazy but does anyone feel like I do?? A not so interesting thing happened to me yesterday, but I felt it showed a fine illustration between the computing world, that of OS's, and the real world... Here's what happened

So I am driving home in my little 1988 Toyota tercel. A small 80s Japanese car with over 180,000 miles, some rust, and a large dent in the hood, but she runs like a champ. As I'm driving I get behind a brand new Toyota Prius. Now I understand why hybrids are so important in the world we live in and I try to conserve as much as possible, but I still think the cars are very ugly and I think we should be looking more into hydrogen power than anything. Anyways so we are going up a hill, not to steep, but this car is going 20 mile/hour!!! Ok I know these things can go faster, but as I come close to the silver probe from a bad 60s space movie, I see to my surprise a Mac sticker of the back!

Now I must explain my feelings on Macs in order for you to get the point. Apple Computer **shudder** has the iPod, good product, iTunes, another good product, Mac, BAD PRODUCT, OS/x build off of a Unix Shell, wants to be "hip and cool" but users just fool themselves by paying a large price for a mediocre product.
My friend, a music major, bought his first mac and thinks its the coolest thing ever, but there is one problem, HE CANT USE IT!!! He doesn't know the first thing about them, and refuses to learn! I had to port over all his mp3s. I hadn't the slightest clue howto but with a quick google I had in done in a few minutes I love him but he's an idiot!
..back to topic...

So as I start to tail this slow hunk of plastic I realized the irony in this as he pulls over to the side and lets me pass..

THE IRONY? A old not so pretty machine is still better than the new crap on the market!!! The Linux box, not always so pretty, is such a superior product to all the others on the market today.

New DTK

Just finished ZEROing the new DTK I got from work! After finding the linuxfromscratch.org project (see previos posts), I thought this would be the perfect commentted machine. I zeroed the hard drive using some great software I found on sourceforge, and used the boot cd from the LFS project. About to start! more postings later : )

Figure IT OUT!

Ok, so here's the thing. Im at a point now where I have enough knowledge to do something, but I just am not sure what, so I found this LFS project. Linux from Scratch? That sounds like me. I want to build an OS, this looks like a good place to start.

I am currently download the live cd, because you need a host system to build on and the cd comes with the HOWTO book.
I love the internet.

In the beginning...

I think before I post anything I should start with an introduction of sorts. I can remember when I first used a computer. I was about six, on my dads old IBM. I dont know what machine it was, but I do remeber learning my first DOS commands. DIR and CD, wow I thought this is so cool. Since then its been all about the command line.

I ponder why I prefer running commands at the command line to using GUIs. I think is just the true simplicity of it, or maybe that feel you get for the true machine. You feel closer to it...

FAST FOWARD eight years later I get my first PC. Its the time of Sega Gensis and SNES. Mortal Kombat was the worst game ever in my parents eyes (oh if they saw the games today..). My Intel Pentium processor. I think my first monitor was still black and white. Windows 95.. That when I first started hacking.

If you dont how what I mean by hacking you should leave now because you prob can understand the rest of this blog.
